Considering the severe falloff in corporate hiring by American employers over the past couple years, the latest round of increasingly positive news about recruitment for business growth has been somewhat muted.

With unemployment for the broader economy projected to languish around 10 percent at least for the next 18 months, casual observers and those hardest hit by the global recession find common ground in doubting the sustainability of private sector payroll growth, investments by U.S. multinationals to expand in emerging markets, and increasing consumer and small business spending.

But a closer look at the economic data reveals what corporate Human Resources leaders, executive search consultants, and American business leaders have known for months. Companies there have done more with less for at least two years and now realize they must recruit, promote and retain top management talent to exploit market opportunities and achieve growth objectives.

Executive-level hiring is indeed a leading indicator of economic and employment market growth. And considering recent survey data that reveal serious levels of management malcontent and more business leaders already engaged in discussions about their next career move, it seems individual executives as well as organizations are ready to answer the call of opportunity.

While some companies continue to selectively upgrade management talent by searching for replacements for underperformers occupying key roles, others are switching from defensive retrenchment and reorganization to offensive-minded hiring, investing and strategic planning.

As executive hiring activity goes, so goes the broader U.S. employment market. And as the American economy continues to gain momentum, the ripple effects can only bolster a global economy in search of sustainable business growth.
